SB lanes of I-5 reopened near Lacey after semi-truck crashes

Dec 12, 2018, 3:17 PM | Updated: 9:32 pm

UPDATE: All lanes of southbound I-5 reopened at milepost 109 near Martin Way in Lacey around 8:30 p.m. They were closed for most of the day due to three crashed semis and a box truck.

At 3:47 p.m., Washington State Patrol initially estimated four hours before lanes can be reopened, but WSDOT has since amended that to say that there is no ETA. All lanes are being detoured to Martin Way.

KIRO 7’s Jay Johnson reports that the backup right now is seven miles long “and growing,” and advises drivers coming from JBLM to exit at Nisqually to get on Martin Way early.

Washington State Trooper Johnna Batiste reports “serious injuries,” asking that drivers be patient as the crash is cleared. Injured drivers have been transported to the hospital — none sustained serious or life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

As of 6:00 p.m., the first two semis have been cleared from the scene. Tow trucks worked together to free a leaning container from a cargo container trailer.

WSDOT is advising drivers to delay or reschedule trips in the area.

This is a developing story. Check back for details.
