Huge community response after Seattle Humane posts urgent call for pet food donations

Nearly two weeks after Seattle Humane posted an urgent call for pet food donations, the community has responded in a huge way.

“It just warms my heart that our volunteers and community care so much to donate to us,” said Seattle Humane intake supervisor Laura Nurss.

On Feb. 26, the shelter posted a picture of an empty warehouse on social media with an urgent plea for help.

Within days, donations started pouring in from across the country into its Bellevue location.

“It’s a huge relief. Usually we have enough food for a month or two at any given time. So, when we were running lower than that, we really wanted to make sure that we could provide and continue to provide care for these animals,” Nurss explained.

It’s critical, according to Nurss, because the food bank provides free pet food to 2,000 low-income families a month, which helps keep pets with their families.

What you see in Bellevue is just a fraction of the donations.

“We’ve received 5,000 boxes and we’ve received about 150,000 pounds of food. We have two more warehouses people generously donated once we had all this food and no place to store it,” Nurss added.

Seattle Humane says it now has enough food to last the next eight months.

“Thank you a million times, thank you,” said Nurss.
