Shell protesters expected to mess up Monday commute

Traffic could be terrible around the Port of Seattle Monday morning for a protest of the Shell oil rig.
The Port said it’s expecting a large contingent of protesters to block access to its terminals. The event will begin around 7 a.m. near the Spokane Street Fishing Bridge.

“Impacts are expected to be significant,” the Port said in a news release.
The last time semi-trucks were at a standstill at the Port of Seattle, traffic backed up well into West Seattle. It took hours for traffic to resume to normal levels in January during a port slowdown.
Protesters have been urged to “exercise their First Amendment rights peacefully, safely and legally in areas adjacent to [port] terminals.”
Demonstrators on boats took to Elliott Bay on Saturday to protest the docking of the rig on its way to drill in the Arctic Ocean.
