How ignition interlock devices prevent drunk driving

...

The Washington State Patrol is determined to keep impaired drivers from becoming repeat impaired drivers. One way they are taking action is by installing Interlock devices into vehicles.

Interlock devices are attached to the vehicles ignition system, requiring drivers to blow into the device before they start the car. If the device detects alcohol, the vehicle will not start.

Before the driver’s sober friend blows into the device, remember there is a camera installed in the vehicle to make sure you are the the driver is the one being tested. Any refusal or failed report will be informed to the Ignition Interlock Program.

The Ignition Interlock Program is part of Washington State’s strategy to eliminate traffic related fatalities by 2030.

The permission for operating a motor vehicle without a required ignition interlock device is a criminal offense.
