A person was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night in Poulsbo, police said.

The shooting happened after 9 p.m. in the middle of a crowd at Waterfront Park during the city’s Third of July fireworks celebration, Poulsbo police said.

On Thursday loved ones identified the man as Stonechild Chiefstick, 39. Chiefstick, who lived in Port Orchard, was a member of the Suquamish Tribe and a father of 5 children, according to friends.

Police said officers responded to a report of a person threatening people.

A struggle ensued when the person was approached by police. An officer fired his weapon, striking the person, officials said. Police said the man was handcuffed and officers gave aid to the person while they waited for medics to arrive.

The person died at the scene from their injuries, police said. No officers were injured in the shooting.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Wilson said his office was assisting in the officer-involved shooting, but no sheriff’s personnel were involved. The Poulsbo Police Department said the Kitsap County Incident Response Team is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting.

The name of the officer involved is not being released at this time. He has been with the Poulsbo Police Department for 5 years.
