Heroin use among Snohomish County students is on the rise, according to results of a health survey.
Students in 12th grade are more likely than those in the rest of Washington to have tried heroin, a Washington State Department of Health survey found. Of students surveyed, 5.7 percent have done heroin.
The amount of 12th graders having used heroin exceeds the statewide average of 3.2 percent, Snohomish Health District spokeswoman Heather Thomas told the Daily Herald.
Almost 12,000 students in sixth, eighth, 10 and 12th grades took the survey, the Herald reported. The survey was done in October.
As for eighth and 10th grade students, 2.8 percent and 3.6 percent respectively said they have tried the drug.
Cocaine use among 12th grade students is down, however. Of those who took the survey, 9.7 percent said they have done cocaine; a decrease since 2008.
Since 2008, the number of eighth and 10th graders reporting the use of illegal drugs – not including marijuana – has been cut in half, according to the results of the survey.
