Curley on Lynch: ‘These things end this way’

Marshawn Lynch’s days could be numbered.

The Seahawks’ star running back is flying out to Philadelphia to have an abdominal injury examined. It’s an injury that kept him out of Sunday’s win over the 49ers.

Lynch’s injury is serious enough for some to question whether the 29 year old will even return to the field as a Seahawk.

KIRO Radio’s Tom Tangney says the inevitable might be closer then fans thought.

Tom Tangney: Surgery is a possibility. I don’t think anyone is saying it’s a probability. This is the downside of Sunday’s game &#8212 we might have seen the last of Lynch as a Seahawk. If he’s not playing the rest of the season … he’s 29 and has thousands of carrier. The day that Lynch leaves the field is inevitable, but might be a little sooner than expected.

John Curley: Isn’t that the way it normally happens? Shaun Alexander was an MVP.

And then…

After agreeing to an eight-year, $62 million contract with the Seahawks, making him the highest paid running back in NFL history at the time, Alexander went into a quick downward spiral in Seattle. First, he broke his foot. The next season, he fracture his left wrist.

In addition to his injuries, changes to the team left him more exposed. The Seahawks decided to cut him in April 2008. He went to Washington where his career ended after one season.

JC: These things end this way.

TT: Shaun has a tough PR problem in this city, because he got the big money and collapsed. Now we don’t know if it was a physical or psychological collapse.

JC: I had friends in the huddle with him that said he used to hate being hit. And when you lose a step you get hit more, and as you get hit more and hate being hit, this is what happens.

But it’s unlikely Lynch’s time in Seattle will end like Alexander’s. First of all, Lynch doesn’t seem to mind being hit; and if he does, he doesn’t let it show. He’s also helped lead the team to two Super Bowls. And even though he doesn’t like to talk to the media much, the fans can’t get enough of him.

Thankfully for the Seahawks, if Lynch’s time with the team does end, they have someone who may have proven to be a solid replacement.
