Pickup truck drives up federal court stairs in Seattle

A truck drove up the stairway to the Federal US Appeals Courthouse in Seattle and came to rest in front of it Monday evening.
“As I was walking out a…pickup came careening down the right hand lane of 5th Avenue and took an abrupt left turn and drove up the staircase of the federal courthouse,” said Brent Campbell who was leaving the library across the street when he witnessed the incident.
Campbell noted that there are two levels of stairs in front of the courthouse. The truck made it to the top of the second level.
“He made an effort to accelerate up those stairs. There is not question about that,” Campbell said. “He came to the front steps of the federal courthouse and he made a deliberate effort go as far as he could up those stairs.”
The roadway on 5th Avenue between Spring Street and Madison Street was initially closed but has since been reopened. A tow truck was called in to tow the truck away.
The Associated Press reports that the man seemed disoriented and wasn’t communicating with officers at the scene. It is unclear whether the man suffered a medical emergency or was intoxicated. There were no explosives or weapons found in the truck.
