Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan will sign legislation strengthening tenant protections Friday.

The mayor and Seattle City Council have been working on the issue for months. Proposals were introduced in July to align with state laws and protect renters in the city.

Residents of Seattle low income housing allege poor living conditions

The legislation will increase the time people have to respond to eviction notices from three to 14 days. Tenants will get 60 days warning of any rent increases. There will also be expanded eligibility for emergency relocation for low-income tenants.

Durkan’s legislation also includes a measure to transfer city-owned property in northwest Seattle to be used for the creation of affordable homes.

Nearly half of all Seattle residents live in rental housing and apartments.
