Seismologists see activity for Chancellor’s touchdown, Sherman’s interception

The Seahawks weren’t the only ones who won Saturday night at CenturyLink Field. Scientists monitoring seismic activity got to put their equipment to the test with several crowd-rousing plays.

With one monitor placed on the field and two in the stands, the needles hopped during Kam Chancellor’s 90-yard touchdown, Richard Sherman’s interception in the first quarter, and Earl_Thomas’ pass defense before the end of first half Saturday night.

This isn’t the first time the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network monitored a Seahawks game for tremors.

PNSN expanded its monitoring since Lynch’s historic 67-yard run in a playoff game against the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints Jan. 8, 2011, which caused the 12th Man to shake the stadium enough to trigger nearby seismic equipment.

Another Lynch run during last year’s NFC Divisional playoff game against the Saints also led to a big enough fan frenzy to shake the seismic monitors as he powered his way to a 15-yard touchdown.

PNSN uses the data to continue development of an early earthquake warning system.
