A day after the Shoreline School District closed all 14 schools because of a report of a man with a gun, the schools are reopening with extra security.
At least one officer is posted at every school Thursday.
Classes were canceled following a lockdown in the Shoreline School District after an elementary school staff member was threatened with a gun Wednesday morning.
A food service employee spotted the man carrying a firearm at Meridian Park Elementary around 8 a.m.
“They had a short conversation and the employee ran into the school,” King County Sheriff’s Sgt. DB Gates told KIRO Radio. “They were concerned about what this person was doing on school grounds.
“Although their interaction was very brief, the male did say something to him eluding that he was going to be going to all the schools. The employee did the right thing and reported it.”
Police described the suspect as a male wearing camo pants and a dark hoodie carrying a firearm. His race and age are unknown.
Deputies searched the area. They say they have received several tips that they’re following up on, but so far the the man with the gun has not been found.
Parents reuniting with their kids at the Spartan Recreation Center Wednesday morning were pleased the district didn’t take any chances.
“Better to be safe than sorry. I would much rather them shut down the school and take this precaution than to have something else happen,” one mother told KIRO Radio.
