Protesters demand officers wear body cameras at Seattle City Hall demonstration

Dec 3, 2014, 10:49 AM | Updated: 5:30 pm

A handful of anti-police brutality protesters gathered at Seattle City Hall Wednesday afternoon demanding police officers wear body cameras.

“MIKE BROWNS FAMILY wanted all police officers nationwide to wear body cameras called Mike Brown LAW..With body cams evidence will not be in dispute or tampered with,” reads the Facebook post.

“The developments from Bruce Harrell and Barack Obama are all talk,” it goes on.

Councilmember Harrell said in a press release Monday that he’s a longtime advocate for body cameras in an effort to improve public safety and transparency. He applauded President Obama’s announcement to allocate $263 million for a body-camera and training expansion program.

“I am in favor of our City applying for this grant with the goal of full deployment of body cameras for the Seattle Police Department in 2016,” Harrell said. “Seattle is currently on schedule to begin the body camera pilot at the end of this year with a complete assessment report completed September 2015.”

The protest is one of many in Seattle following a grand jury’s decision not to indict Ferguson, Mo. police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown last week.
