Classes were canceled Monday at Redmond’s Emily Dickinson Elementary School and Explorer Community School, following an explosion in the parking lot.
King County Sheriff’s Sgt. DB Gates said they received a call about a suspicious item around 7:40 a.m.
The device appeared to be a 2-liter soda bottle. Gates said via Twitter the device was an acid bomb, commonly made by juveniles. “It wasn’t a sophisticated device.”
Two adults have been taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
“It exploded as they walked by, hit the adult that was walking by and a second adult may have been exposed to a chemical that came from that explosive device,” Gates said.
“It is best described as a prank that they probably didn’t even intend for it to be left there or found this morning. And we don’t believe, in any way, that the school was targeted.”
Gates said a bomb disposal crew is investigating. Officers combed the outside of the school and a nearby junior high. No other devices were found.
Detectives are trying to track down surveillance footage or witnesses to find a suspect.
