Two people have been injured in a three-alarm apartment fire in Kent.

A man and woman suffered broken bones jumping from a third-floor balcony.

The first fire responders could see a column of smoke rising from the sprawling Mosaic Hills complex as they left the fire station a few blocks away, according to Kent Deputy Fire Marshal Don Barberie.

Fire crews were called from SeaTac, Renton and Tukwila to help fight the flames. It took more than two hours to put out the fire.

“People were screaming, ‘That apartment’s on fire’ and all of a sudden, thick smoke started coming out from under the door,” said fire victim Johnny Wilson.

Wilson said people starting pounding on doors to make sure everybody got out OK.

The Red Cross is on scene and property managers were trying to relocate displaced tenants to other apartments in the complex.

The fire was confined to one large building in the complex and as many as 12 units were damaged or destroyed.

The exact cause of the fire and a damage estimate were not available.
