On the growing list of concerns for a building or space that’s been unoccupied for a period of time is a risk of rodent infestation, according to Public Health — Seattle & King County. Rats and mice are common pests in King County, and even if pest control services continued during quarantine, the public health website warns everyone to take extra precautions when returning to your building.

Outside, be sure to inspect your building for entry points along the foundation. Look at doors, attics, and rooftops for signs of rodents, including dropping, grease or rub markings, and gnawed holes.
Remove any rodent food, including garbage, junk items, or overgrown vegetation. King County says rodents are attracted to pet food, pet waste, human garbage, compost, and fallen berries or fruit.
Inside the building, wear a mask or face covering. Open windows and door to improve ventilation and allow 30 minutes before re-entering. Again, look for signs of rodents, including droppings, urine, nests, damage, a new odor, or dead rodents.
If you find evidence of rats and mice in your building space, King County warns that special care should be taken when cleaning. If there are signs of an active infestation, follow CDC guidelines and consider consulting a pest control professional.
