Seattle’s school district is now recommending that instruction in the fall begins remotely, until the risk of transmission of COVID-19 has decreased.

Covid-19 updates

“The current trajectory of infection in King County and the most recent data and information from public health makes it clear that resuming school in-person this fall is impossible,” Superintendent Denise Juneau said in a news release.

The school board will vote on Juneau’s recommendation and plan for fall during its regular board meeting on Aug. 12.

The shift to remote learning is a change from the district’s previous plan for a hybrid model that combines in-person/in-school learning and remote learning.

The district said the latest recommendation has been endorsed by both the Seattle Education Association (SEA) and the Principals Association of Seattle Schools (PASS).

Districts’ plans for reopening schools across Western Washington

“Given the increasing transmission rates, SEA fully supports opening schools this fall with remote learning only,” Jennifer Matter, SEA president, said in the same news release. “Returning in a remote learning model means our students, staff, and community can stay safe.”
