Officer assault, property damage prompts arrests in Seattle over weekend

Seattle police say one person was arrested on Saturday after an officer was assaulted by people in a crowd at 11th Ave. and E. Olive Street. Officers were responding to a damage call in the area.

On Friday night, three people were arrested after police say a crowd of about 100 people marched along Broadway, causing property damage. Some of the people in the crowd broke windows and spray painted graffiti on businesses.

SPD said many in the group were carrying carrying shields and wearing gas masks, helmets, and body armor when they began marching on Broadway from Cal Anderson Park around 10:20 p.m. Vehicles moved between the marchers and police in an attempt to block officers.

The three people arrested were booked in King County Jail.

A few hours later, officers responded to a report of a possible fire inside a business in the 1600 block of East Olive Way.

Officers discovered a broken window and a small fire inside. Seattle Fire arrived and extinguished the fire.

A witness told officers that he heard breaking glass and saw two people standing outside the building. He said he called 911 when he saw flickering light from inside and realized it was a flame. Officers recovered a can from inside the business that is believed to be the source of the fire. The can was submitted into evidence and arson detectives are investigating.

There were no injuries reported from the fire.
