Worried veterinarians are keeping close watch on E.T., a 3,300-pound walrus at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium who may have an infection.
The 32-year-old Pacific walrus remains in stable, but “guarded” condition while zoo staff keeps him under mild sedation.
“His blood values point to an infection,” said head veterinarian Dr. Karen Wolf. “We are continuing diagnostic tests and providing treatment based on those blood values.”
E.T. became lethargic and began refusing food on Monday. Veterinarians tried to perform an ultrasound on him Tuesday night, but they say his “extensive” blubber layer prevented them from getting diagnostic readings.
The zoo says E.T. is receiving round-the-clock care from veterinarians and zookeepers who are giving him fluids and medication.
E.T. has been a popular draw at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium since arriving there as an orphan 32 years ago.
