President Obama asks Americans to keep mudslide victims in prayers

Mar 25, 2014, 8:45 AM | Updated: 8:55 am

President Obama took time during a speech in the Netherlands to offer condolences to the people of Snohomish County for lives lost in that massive mudslide Saturday.

The president appeared at a press conference with the Dutch Prime Minister and mentioned the disaster in Oso.

“Part of this tightly-knit community has been lost. First responders have acted bravely despite still dangerous conditions. The American Red Cross has opened multiple shelters and the people of Washington state have been quick to help and comfort their fellow citizens.”

The president said he spoke with Governor Jay Inslee to offer continued federal support after signing a declaration of emergency.

“I would just ask that all Americans to send their thoughts and prayers to Washington state and the community of Oso and the families and friends of those who continue to be missing.”

The president told Inslee he was glad FEMA was on the scene as of Tuesday morning and reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to assist local and state efforts.
