Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler has represented the 3rd Congressional District since 2011, having served in the state House of Representatives prior to that. Democratic challenger Carolyn Long has been a tenured professor at WSU Vancouver for 25 years.

In 2016, Herrera Beutler won re-election to the District 3 Congressional seat by garnering 61.8% of the vote. She then squared off against Long in 2018, winning 52.7% to 47.3%. In August’s Primary, Herrera Beutler won with 56.2% of voters, followed by Long at 39.7%.

Herrera Beutler was one of two Republican Congressional members in Washington state to vote against President Trump’s emergency declaration in February to fund a border wall.

“Despite the lack of progress on border security, using an emergency declaration to circumvent congressional action – whether Congress is right or, in this case, dead wrong – is a very dangerous path,” Herrera Beutler said in a statement posted to Facebook.

On the vote to impeach President Trump, she wrote: “The president’s motives for his actions remain unproven,” Herrera Beutler affirmed. “I will not vote to impeach based on hearsay testimony from secondhand sources – to do so diminishes impeachment to a mere political disagreement.”

Long, who held 46% of the vote on Wednesday, got her undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon and her doctorate at Rutgers University. She has not spent much time in politics, according to her statement in the voters pamphlet.

Rather, Long taught at Washington State University in Vancouver since 1995. Before that, she worked at her family’s small business, Safeway, and Red Robin.

Long said she’s fighting for affordable health care and prescription drugs, small businesses, and investing in infrastructure.
