The City of Olympia reports that a man died Monday while in police custody.
Intercity Transit employees called 911 around 2:30 p.m. after a man was able to get into their administrative facilities. That area is usually locked, preventing unwanted visitors. The man then started to act violently and assaulted one person.
Employees tried to contain the man, but he continued to be combative.
Police arrived and took the man into custody, but he became violent again once outside the building — kicking and spitting on officers. The man was then handcuffed.
During the incident police noticed that the man seemed ill. Medics were already on scene to treat an employee injured from the assault. Those medics attempted to treat the violent man, and administered life-saving treatment. Despite their efforts, the man died.
The deceased man is a white male in his 30s or 40s. He has yet to be identified.
As with other deaths while in police custody, the incident is being investigated by the Thurston County Critical Incident Team.
