Colder temperatures expected for Puget Sound

Dec 5, 2013, 4:34 PM | Updated: Dec 7, 2013, 8:07 am

It’s been fairly frigid the last week around the Puget Sound area. But forecasters says it’s going to get even colder.

The National Weather Service says another round of arctic air is heading our way from Canada, pushing low temperatures into the teens across Western Washington on Saturday night and Sunday morning. Some areas could drop into the single digits.

Daytime highs are expected to remain below freezing throughout the weekend.

Meteorologist Josh Smith in Seattle says the forecast Saturday of 18 at Sea-Tac Airport would be the coldest since November 2010 and tie the record low set on Dec. 7 in 1972.

He says the temperature Monday also could approach the record low of 18 set on Dec. 9, 2009.

Officials are warning people to take precautions. “Probably the number one thing you can do is protect your pipes,” said Ingrid Goodwin with Seattle Public Utilities. “Freezing and breaking pipes can result in lots of damage and costly repairs.”

Goodwin says SPU recommends shutting off all outside faucets, disconnecting hoses and draining all outside lines, then wrapping them for warmth.

The cold snap isn’t expected to end until Monday when a system from the south rolls in. As the temperatures warm up and precipitation moves in, forecasters say we may see snow or freezing rain in some locations.

Beyond Tuesday, Marriott says we should be back to normal Western Washington weather with rain in the lowlands and snow in mountains.
