Where has Phoenix Jones been in the past few months? Writing a book.

Seattle’s caped crusader released a preface to his book on his Facebook page Wednesday night with early readers clamoring for more.

Jones starts off writing about the saddest thing he can think of, on advice from a book publisher character in Watchmen.

“The saddest thing I can think of is the name Nicole. Not only did I fail her, but never before had I realized just how dangerous my life choices had been.”

Jones goes on to describe the April 2012 night Nicole Westbrook was shot and killed in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. Jones and his team of superheros were on the scene immediately after shots were fired.

Westbrook and her boyfriend were walking home from a comedy club around 2 a.m. when gunfire erupted.

“A white car rolled past them on 2nd Avenue and Yesler, and fired random shots from the vehicle,” Seattle Police Detective Renee Witt had said. “One of them struck Nicole and she died as a result of her injuries.”

Witt said Westbrook and her boyfriend were not the intended targets. “They just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Jones writes that he thought he locked on to who he believed was the shooter, but an officer told him they should wait for backup.

“I start running again, but the gap in time it took to process the officer’s request was just enough to loosen the grip I had on the situation and the gunman slipped right through my fingers.”

Jones says when he returned to the scene, he saw Westbrook dying on the ground, trying to say something.

He stayed with her until an ambulance hauled her away, the sidewalk was washed, and Pioneer Square returned to normal.

Jones makes it clear he thinks he failed Westbrook as the chance to catch her killer was lost.
