Seattle set to restrict homeless camps

Jul 29, 2013, 5:41 AM | Updated: 7:59 am

Homeless camps would no longer be able to set up in residential neighborhoods under a plan to be voted on by the Seattle City Council on Monday.

Camps would be restricted to industrial areas only under these new rules. The rules would also only allow three of these camps to operate at any one time and house no more than 300 people total.

Operators would have to provide running water and toilets for residents and they would have to provide insurance to cover the city against any liability.

The camps would be able to set up on public or private land and stay in place for a year.

Not all homeless advocates like the plan, saying it restricts their options and doesn’t improve their situation.
