Iconic century-old Seattle bakery announces permanent closure

Mar 20, 2021, 5:01 PM | Updated: 5:06 pm

First it was Aplets & Cotlets, and now it’s a Seattle area institution known for its desserts.

As KIRO Radio historian Feliks Banel first reported via Twitter on Friday, longtime local retail icon Borracchini’s Bakery announced Saturday that the Rainier Avenue landmark is now permanently closed.

In a post on the bakery’s Facebook page early Saturday afternoon, the Borracchini family wrote:

As you know, Remo Borracchini’s Bakery is known for our wonderful cakes and because of this, we are in the party business. The problem with that is no one has been gathering over this past year to have those parties. Needless to say, it was devastating to our business. After considering our options, we’ve made a very difficult decision to remain closed permanently.

A huge thank you to you, our devoted customers and loyal crew who are all like our extended family. You all have given us a lifetime of memories that will never be forgotten. It has been a privilege to be a part of all of your birthdays, anniversaries and important lifetime celebrations. We wish everyone great health, much success and an abundance of happiness as we all navigate the future together.

This year, we were able to achieve our 100th year anniversary. Thank you all for being an integral part of it! We could not have done it without YOU!

The bakery was well-known for sheet cakes for all occasions – decorated on extremely short notice – for impromptu celebrations or just-remembered-in-the-nick-of-time birthdays and anniversaries. Like many retailers, the family-owned Borracchini’s has been closed for much of the past year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is a developing story.
