An Army soldier home on leave helped save the life of a 16-year-old who was near drowning in Snohomish County’s Lake Goodwin.

Joel Irwin was with his wife and kids visiting his Washington family over the 4th of July weekend while on leave from his station in Colorado. They were at Lake Goodwin on Sunday when swimmers pulled the lifeless body of a 16-year-old Everett boy out of the water.

Irwin had just taken his CPR re-certification and he did not hesitate. He and others performed CPR until paramedics arrived. The boy’s pulse had returned as he was rushed to the hospital. He’s still alive.

The Everett Herald reports Irwin wasn’t even supposed to be in Washington on Sunday. His family had been planning to return to Colorado on Friday, but decided to extend their stay.
