Warm weather is on the horizon for the Puget Sound region, with Western Washington due for its first day 70-degree day of the year by the end of the week.

According to KIRO 7 meteorologist Nick Allard, Monday will likely be the coldest day of the week, before temperatures in the Seattle area climb into the the low 70s by Friday, and then up to “at least 75” by Saturday and Sunday. Despite how volatile weather in the region can be, he notes that he’s “as close to positive as possible” about that forecast.

After this week of warmer weather, temperatures are expected to dip back down into the 60s by the start of next week.

The National Weather Service points out that while this may feel like a sizable shift, Seattle typically sees its first 70-degree day of the year around April 15.

“So almost right on schedule, should it happen!” it said on Twitter on Sunday.

The NWS went on to predict that we can expect cooler temperatures than we’re used to as the early weeks of spring continue, before “trending towards warmer then normal as we get into summer.”

Allard qualified that prediction for the rest of the season, though, given that we’re still a ways out.

“That far out I just, I don’t want to go there yet because that’s something that can change,” he told KIRO Radio’s Gee and Ursula Show on Monday. “But I can tell you that there won’t be any changes this week, and then the next week it still at least looks like it’s going to start dry before maybe we see some changes.”

Meanwhile, a cold snap swept through Western Washington over the weekend. That saw the Seattle area set a record low for the day on Sunday at 34 degrees, with similar records set in Olympia (27 degrees), Hoquiam (30 degrees), and Bellingham (30 degrees).
