With the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing in Washington, but the state opened since June, local festivals and events are starting to plan ahead for the rest of 2021.

MyNorthwest will keep an updated list of upcoming canceled, altered, or scheduled local events in 2021.

Hoopfest

Spokane’s 2021 Hoopfest, originally scheduled for Sept. 11-12, has been cancelled.

“After numerous conversations with the Governor’s office, State Department of Health, City of Spokane, Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) and MultiCare Health System, it has been determined that Hoopfest 2021 is canceled,” reads a Spokane Hoopfest Association press release. “This decision has been excruciatingly difficult, especially because the circumstances have significantly worsened in just the past 48 hours. Our priority has always been the health, safety, and wellbeing of our community. It is with that in mind that we are following the guidance of the authorities to cancel the event scheduled for next month.”

The world’s largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament is now scheduled to take place June 25 and 26, 2022.

Bumbershoot

Seattle’s Bumbershoot Arts & Music Festival will not be taking place for the second year in a row, and will be forming an exploratory committee to determine the future of the Labor Day event. The festival cited the pandemic as the primary reason behind its cancellation, with hopes to return in 2022.

Seattle Center will debut a new musical festival over Labor Day weekend: Day In Day Out. Produced by Daydream State (organizer of Capitol Hill Block Party), the two-day festival at Fisher Pavilion Sept. 4-5 will try to fill the void left by Bumbershoot this year.

ZooTunes

Woodland Park Zoo will be welcoming guests back for the annual ZooTunes concert season this summer, with a few changes due to COVID-19. The line-up in 2021 will be curated by Seattle radio station KEXP and will focus on local musicians.

In accordance with state and CDC safety guidelines, tickets will only be available online this year and not at the Zoo gates; there will be just one entry for concert-goers; seating will be available in pods of two, four, six, or 10 with space between each pod; and no outside food or beverages will be allowed.

The Evergreen State Fair

Plans are being developed to open an 11-day Evergreen State Fair at the Evergreen State Fair Park in Monroe from Aug. 26-31 and Sept. 2-6. This year’s theme is “Back in the Saddle Again — Open for Fun in 2021.” Organizers say the fair will “feel and look a little different in 2021,” with more announcements about entertainment, exhibits, and vendors to be announced in the coming months.

Emerald City Comic Con

One of the country’s biggest comic cons will return to Seattle this December. Emerald City Comic Con announced its comeback in late May, with plans for a four-day pop culture extravaganza Dec. 2-5 at the Washington State Convention Center in downtown Seattle. Vendors and headliners have not yet been announced.

Washington State Fair

The Washington State Fair is back for 2021. Organizers announced that the fair will be welcoming back guests, staff, and vendors this September. The fair was canceled last year due to the pandemic, the first time it had been canceled since World War II. This year’s event will take place from Sept. 3 to 26.

Check back for updates as more events announce plans for 2021.
