A baby seriously injured in a DUI crash in North Seattle last month is expected to go home this week.

In a blog post, Dan Schulte wrote that the feeding tube was removed from his son, Elias, on Tuesday and he’s now eating all his meals from a bottle.

“This is a huge step,” Schulte said. “He’s looking so good and I’m very proud of the progress he’s made.”

The infant also was able to visit his mother, Karina, for a second time at the hospital where she’s recovering.

Elias was in a carrier attached to his mother walking across the street near Eckstein Middle School in Seattle’s Wedgwood neighborhood when a vehicle slammed into them. It was Karina’s first walk after her C-section.

Elias’ grandparents, Judy and Dennis Schulte, were killed in the crash. They had recently moved from the Midwest to be closer to their new grandson, who was only 10 days old that Monday afternoon in March.

Schulte wrote on Tuesday that he couldn’t be happier and he knows his parents are “smiling too.”

The suspected repeat drunk driver, Mark Mullan, is in jail on $2.5 million bail.
