Potential pay increases for Tacoma city workers raise some eyebrows

The Tacoma City Council is expected to vote Tuesday on pay raises for city workers that could total more than $4.9 million.
More than 400 non-union city workers would be covered under the measure being considered. The News Tribune reports many of the raises are “market-driven,” and some are to address managers who are currently making less than the workers they supervise.
Some in the city say it doesn’t make sense because many of those getting the biggest increases are already among the highest paid in Tacoma.
The director of Tacoma Public Utilities, for example, currently makes $310,000 per year, would get an 18 percent raise to more than $360,000.
