A savior should not be coming from Washington D.C.

May 12, 2016, 3:43 PM

Many people are looking for something within politics that can’t come through politics. People are seeking a savior out of politicians.

And they don’t always need their saviors to be nice. Bernie Sanders doesn’t seem particularly warm or nice. But Bernie says that he will make everything OK. He’ll take from the bad and give to the good.

And Trump says he is the only smart one in the race. Only he can fix the trade problems. Only he can deal with ISIS.  Only “he” can do these things.

Even in the face of massive hypocrisy people still want to believe in their political savior. Trump denigrates other cultures and Bernie denigrates the rich. But do saviors typically need to denigrate others? Did Christ use to go around making fun of people? We’re seeking in a politician something we can’t find in a politician.

It’s always the next time, four years from now, when we’ll get the right person in the office who’ll fix everything. No one is going to come into D.C. and be the lynchpin to unlock all good things.

We’ve become a nation so vulnerable to those who say “I will fix it” that we think the next person in office will be the one. The promise of a better society isn’t coming from D.C. It’s coming from little acts of rebellion and bravery from individuals around the country.
