Lawmakers threaten another 10 cent hike in gas tax

With gas prices spiking again right now, can you afford another 10 cent hike in the state gas tax?

State House Transportation Chair Judy Clibborn will propose a 10 cent increase in Washington’s gas tax Wednesday. It’s part of a larger tax increase package to pay for road and bridge repairs in the state. That would push Washington’s gas tax to 47.5 cents a gallon, almost the highest in the nation.

The 37.5 cents a gallon we pay now is already one of the highest gas taxes in the country.

The legislature last passed a gas tax increase in 2005, adding nearly 10 cents a gallon at the pump.

This tax increase would need a two-thirds majority in both the House and the Senate to pass.
