The pilot program is over. Now it’s the real deal in Tacoma. Every other week garbage collection begins March 11.
The city has been testing the idea for nearly two years, and now it’s going to roll it out officially. Those with Monday service will make the change first. The rest of the days will be phased-in throughout the year.
Mike Slevin is the interim director of Environmental Services for the city. He said service isn’t being cut, despite the new schedule.
“Right now, if you’re at a 30 gallon can and you go to every other week garbage collection, you would get a 60 gallon can every other week,” he said. “Your volume of collection would be the same.”
Slevin believes the city will save more than a million dollars a year with this change.
Customers will receive advance notice in the mail and by phone.
