Another mudslide has knocked out Sounder service for north-end commuters, adding to record 12 months of cancellations.

North-end riders had their first chance to board trains in two weeks Thursday morning, but they couldn’t get home. A mid-day mudslide knocked out service again.

The Seattle Times reports there have been a record 122 train cancellations in the last year. That’s 50 more than the previous record.

There have been 73 mudslides since Thanksgiving along the stretch of tracks north of Seattle. “The level of instability is a real safety issue,” said Sound Transit’s Kimberly Reason.

The state is looking at how to prevent these slides in the future. It has received a grant from the federal government to work on the problem.

Only 1,300 people use the trains each day, which is far below what Sound Transit expected.
