Kitsap schools get extra police presence for Newtown one-week anniversary

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Department plans to beef up its presence in local school districts Friday to ensure safety on the one-week anniversary of the Newtown, Conn. school shootings and the predicted end of the world.
The department took the steps as rumors surfaced earlier this week about threats of violence that were supposedly going to happen Friday in some North Kitsap schools.
Investigators determined the rumors were unsubstantiated and not credible. Deputy Scott Wilson says Sheriff Steve Boyer decided to add off-duty deputies to supplement regular school security as a precautionary measure.
“We just wanted to have a sheriff’s office presence in as many schools as we can get officers to to just lend a sense of safety and a sense of calm,” Wilson says.
Deputies will be present in high schools, middle schools and some elementary schools within the North Kitsap, Central Kitsap and South Kitsap school districts.
