With a nod to Seattle’s BIPOC communities, Mariners move to revitalize former Pyramid Brewery

An inauspicious reminder of the damage COVID wrought on Seattle’s businesses — the old Pyramid Brewery building across from T-Mobile Park has new owners: the Seattle Mariners.
The organization has signed a 23-year lease for the 30,000 square foot property at 1201 1st Avenue South. Development plans include a restaurant, craft brewery, and event space.
Pyramid Brewing closed its SoDo location in April 2020, citing the decrease in foot-traffic brought on by the stadium closures over the COVID-19 pandemic. Pyramid is owned by FIFCO USA. Most of its beer was produced in its Portland facility, which closed in February 2021. The brand still exists, but its production has been relocated to Rochester, N.Y.
The new brew pub at the former Pyramid location will be “Steelheads Alley,” named for a Seattle Negro League team that played a single season in 1946. The pub will feature beers from Métier Brewing, Washington state’s first Black-owned brewery.

“When the chance to partner with the Mariners arose, we were incredibly excited by the opportunity to be part of this history and reach even more people with our award-winning beers and mission to inspire bigger dreams for all,” wrote Metier Brewing CEO Rodney Hines in a press release. “We feel really fortunate to be joining the organization at such an exciting and critical time and look forward to the many ways this space will provide access to fans and community members from all backgrounds.”
Also attached to the former Pyramid Brewery property will be a sports bar and grill with seating capacity for 250 people. The menu will feature “Pacific Northwest cuisine with locally-sourced ingredients, local craft brews, including Métier Brewing, and Washington wines,” according to a Mariners’ press release.
The former Pyramid Brewing will also feature a 15,000-square-foot event space with seating capacity for 800. It will include “state of the art audio and visual systems,” with flat screen TVs to facilitate sporting and entertainment events. The Mariners report that they are in talks with promoters to use the space as a live music venue.
July or August 2022 is the targeted opening date. The pub/restaurant/venue will be open year-round.
