You’re familiar with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but now there’s a new special day to kick off the holiday season “Giving Tuesday.”

This Tuesday marks the first Giving Tuesday, the brain child of charitable organizations to focus on the real reason for the season.

“The idea behind Giving Tuesday is that we can also use a day to really kick off what the holiday season is all about and that’s really about helping others,” says Caleb Tiller with the United Nations Foudnation.

The day isn’t just about donating a few dollars. It’s about doing what you can to help your favorite charity, and it can be as simple as giving your time.

“We really want to encourage people to give to whatever is important to them and that may be a local soup kitchen, it may be an organization that helps pets, or helps homeless people, or it may be an organization that’s helping people half way around the world.”

The Giving Tuesday website offers lots of ideas on how you can give back and get involved.
