Speeders caught by new automated cameras in school zones around the Seattle area will begin getting fined starting Monday.

The cameras that were installed in early November have been issuing warnings up to this point, but beginning Nov. 26 drivers that break rules of the speed zones around four schools in the Seattle area will be getting a real ticket.

The speed cameras are located at Broadview-Thomson K-8 School, Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, Olympic View Elementary School and Gatewood Elementary School. It was found that speeding was a problem in those zones.

The cameras are only active when the yellow lights on the signs are flashing. That only happens when kids are present, usually during the morning and afternoon walks to and from home.

The Seattle Police Department says the goal is not to just hand out tickets, but to increase safety and reduce collisions in school zones.
