Airmen from Washington are winging their way east to assist in relief efforts following Hurricane Sandy.

A C-17 Globemaster III took off from Joint Base Lewis McChord Thursday morning and a second flight is scheduled to depart the base at 9 p.m. Thursday night.

The aircraft will pick up passengers, supplies, and equipment from March Air Reserve Base in California before heading to its final destination at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, New York.

Their cargo will include 69 vehicles belonging to the Southern California Edison electric company.

“McChord Airmen are ready to answer our nation’s call with the most capable combat airlift aircraft,” says Colonel Jeffrey Philippart, Vice Commander of the 62nd Airlift Wing.

This will not be the first relief effort for the JBLM airmen. They recently provided aid to the Japanese tsunami response. A C-17 delivered supplies and helped thousands of military family members stationed in Japan get back to safety in the U.S.
