Federal judge appoints monitor to oversee Seattle Police reforms

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn didn’t like the choice, but a federal judge has now approved Merrick Bobb as the independent monitor to oversee reforms at the Seattle Police Department.
The mayor questioned whether Bobb could be impartial, but the Seattle City Council overwhelmingly backed the consultant out of Los Angeles to be the liaison between the city and the Justice Department as they combat a perceived pattern of “excessive force” within SPD.
They now have 120 days to come up with a “monitoring plan.”
“Prioritize, schedule, and figure out how to assess whether there is compliance with the various agreements that have already been made,” explained Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Bates.
He said Bobb will consult with the city and the feds as those plans are being created.
