On last day of school, Seattle Superintendent says district-union relationship is improving

Summer vacation is finally here for Seattle students.

An extra week was tacked to the 2015-16 school year thanks to the labor dispute between the teachers union and the administration.

Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Larry Nylund says the relationship between the teachers union and the administration has gotten much better over the school year. He says both sides have been working hard to resolve pay issues and the inequality between schools in the north and south.

“Our race and equity teams are launched and we’re expanding networks into more schools,” Nylund said. “Our peer assistant review is picking up.”

Nylund says he’s seen the relationships improve firsthand.

“The fundamental thing that is near and dear to my heart is the opportunity to be in classrooms every week and seeing the good work that teachers are doing in classrooms,” he said. “I put the teaching in Seattle schools up against any place that I’ve worked at in the past.”

For its part, the union says relations have never been better.
