Speeding drivers who blew through the work zone on I-90 at Snoqualmie Pass will soon be paying the price. The Washington State Department of Transportation has begun mailing $137 citations to 301 vehicle owners whose cars were caught on camera speeding between Sept. 17 and 28.

WSDOT recently started using automated speed enforcement cameras in the work zone to help reduce speeds and improve safety for workers and travelers in the area between Hyak and Keechelus dam where crews are building a new six-lane highway.

There are plenty of warnings. Roadside signs tell drivers a small SUV is parked near the highway monitoring speeds in both directions. A camera inside the SUV captures the rear license plates of vehicles going over the speed limit.

According to WSDOT, the Washington State Patrol reviews and certifies each citation.

WSDOT plans to keep using the automated speed enforcement in the I-90 Snoqualmie Pass work zone until construction stops for winter.
