A federal judge is expected to sign off Friday on the agreement between the City of Seattle and the Department of Justice over sweeping reforms to the police department.

Once the judge signs the agreement, the city and the DOJ have two months to appoint the independent monitor that will oversee the reforms. The sides will also have six months to create a new police commission.

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn told Ross and Burbank in an interview Thursday he’s looking forward to finally implementing the hard fought agreement.

“You’re going to see both sides will have some disagreements with it. It could have been better, but the fact that everybody is dedicated to making it work puts our city in a good place,” McGinn said.

The police union or another group could still challenge the agreement before it is signed, but there are no indications that any group is going to do that.

“The fact that everybody’s dedicated to making it work puts our city in a good place. Now we have a lot of work to do, but we’re in a good place to do that work when people are committed to making it work as opposed to being in conflict over it,” McGinn said.
