With the rumored release of a new iPhone looming, major retailers have begun sharply cutting the price of the iPhone.

Target, Best Buy, Sprint, and Radio Shack have all slashed the price by $50 for the popular smartphone.

Target is now selling the iPhone 4S starting at $150 for a 16GB model that runs on AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, while Best Buy cut the price of an 8GB iPhone 4 to $50.

Sprint became the first carrier to slash the iPhone 4S price last week and waived its $36 activation fee for online orders, PC World reports.

Apple is also offering to match the discounted prices at its retail stores. The offer is not available online or advertised. Shoppers have to ask for the discount.

The price cuts are an implicit sign a new iPhone will be unveiled soon. Analysts predict the next version should be announced the week of Sept. 10. The company is keeping details under wraps, but leaked design specs show a slightly larger screen, unibody design, and a smaller dock connector.
