After disappointing people seeking relief from the heat, the Seattle Parks Department is vowing to fix its spray parks ahead of forecast warm weather.

The city now operates nine of the spray parks which run on a filter similar to a swimming pool, but last weekend, many of them malfunctioned under heavy use.

“The technology in the system is such that if the tanks get clogged from dirt that’s caused by heavy use, then the filters can’t keep up and they shut off,” says Dewey Potter, Parks Department spokesperson.

Bulbs in the ultraviolet system used to sterilize and disinfect the water also overheated and turned off the spray features over the weekend.

Potter says crews are working overtime to come up with solutions to keep all nine parks fully operational under heavy use.

The biggest problems were reported at the city’s newest parks at Northacres, Georgetown Playfield, and Beacon Mountain at Jefferson Park.

You can check the wading pool hotline at 206-684-7796 to find out if a spray park is operational before heading out.
