A 2-year-old boy who shot himself while playing with a loaded gun remains in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center, but he is expected to survive.

The toddler was playing with a felon’s gun when it went off at a motel in South Seattle on Monday.

“The boy was taken into emergency surgery. Thankfully, after that, the boy is expected to survive,” Seattle Detective Patrick Michaud said.

The Seattle Police Department reports that the boy was rushed to Harborview with a gunshot wound by his mother and her boyfriend around 9:30 a.m. The couple took the child to the hospital in their vehicle and did not call 911.

The toddler was playing with the gun at a motel in the 8000 block of East Marginal Way South, according to Seattle police. Detectives searched the motel room and determined the child shot himself while playing with the loaded firearm.

Seattle police intend to recommend charging the boyfriend with a felony weapons charge — he is legally not allowed to possess a firearm.
