Gas leak forces evacuation of Seattle’s Pike Place Market

Jul 12, 2016, 1:10 PM | Updated: 1:26 pm

Crowds of customers and tourists were evacuated from Seattle’s Pike Place Market Monday afternoon after reports of a gas leak.

The evacuation lasted approximately one hour before crews with Puget Sound Energy were able to cap a broken line and stop the gas leak.

The entire north end of the market was cleared out shortly after noon — from the famous fish market at 1st Avenue to Virginia Street. The southern portion of the market was not evacuated.

The Seattle Fire Department believes a construction crew broke a 2-inch gas line while working in the area, according to Lt. Harold Webb.

Firefighters, police and crews from Puget Sound Energy responded to the scene. PSE crews were able to plug the gas leak. No injuries were reported.
