Chance for ‘severe storm’ across Western Washington as wind, rain move in Monday

Strong winds and stormy weather are on the way in Western Washington, with the chance for a “severe storm” by Monday evening, the National Weather Service warns.

“The incoming storm system will present multiple potential hazards for Western Washington,” the NWS cautions.
That will bring “heavy” snow in the mountains, strong winds across the region, rising river levels, and potential thunderstorms. Wind in particular is expected to cause issues, with coastal areas and the northern interior likely to experience gusts of up to 55 miles an hour.
That will come alongside “moderate to locally heavy” rainfall and pockets of hail between Monday morning and the evening hours. The NWS says that “colder unstable air” could also lead to isolated thunderstorms up and down Western Washington.

Those conditions could lead to downed trees and power poles on roadways, as well as outages across Snohomish, Pierce, and King counties. Already, Puget Sound Energy is reporting power outages affecting over 9,000 customers.

In the mountains, one to two feet of snow is expected to fall through the passes. Travel through that area will become difficult as a result, with drivers advised to delay trips planned for Monday and Tuesday if possible.
Rainy and windy weather will begin to fade late Tuesday. By Wednesday, temperatures in the Seattle area will warm to around 60 degrees with dry conditions in the forecast until the weekend.
