The ‘Junuary’ of our discontent

Let the discontent, moaning and handwringing commence.
Yes, it’s Junuary in Seattle, time to
complain about the weather.

The fact is that what we’re experiencing is close
to typical for June. Johnny Burg, at the National Weather
Service in Seattle looked it up.

Yes, it’s been wet
early.

“Although it’s not really too uncommon for June to
be a little cloudy and wet, it is cooler than usual and
also this rain that we’re having is definitely a little
heavier than what we usually get this time of year,” Burg
said.

The statistics show June is not a rainy month in
Seattle.

“We usually see about 1.57 inches,” said Burg. “We could probably get close to what we get for the
whole month of June [in the first week].”

The National Weather Service noted record rainfall on Thursday in Western Washington.

And true, highs lately have been about ten degrees
below normal. But, it could be worse. You could live in
Denver, with severe thunderstorms and tornadoes this week.
Or Dallas, where winds ripped the roof off an apartment
complex and lightning demolished a church. Rain and
flooding has also forced evacuations.

At least we don’t have any severe weather here this time of year.

“Usually, it’s during the winter months and when
you get into summer, it’s pretty tame as compared to
places
back east,” said Burg. “I’m from Iowa and I remember
thunderstorms and tornadoes and stuff like that, but here,
it’s not so bad.”

Expect typical June weather, partly cloudy and 69
degrees, to return by Monday.

weather we’ve had this spring.
