Darren Dedo, KIRO Newsradio crime reporter, covers overnight crime in the Puget Sound region on the morning of July 7: Seattle police arrest a man for threatening people in South Seattle, a new report about 50 stolen vehicles in Pierce County over the July Fourth weekend, UPS driver and failed burglar arrested, and a suspect identified in shooting at a salvage yard in Lynnwood.

Seattle Police arrest man for violent threats

Seattle Police Department has released details about the arrest of a 32-year-old man arrested after threatening people with a rifle in SODO the night before.

While arresting him at his car, police found the weapon used in the original report.

During the arrest, the man tried to flee in his car, but he quickly crashed it.

Officers were able to catch the man, and he is awaiting trial in King County Jail.

Almost 50 vehicles stolen in Pierce County

Car thefts are always a problem, but that problem seems to get worse during the Fourth of July weekend, according to a report from the Pierce County Auto Theft Task Force.

The Task Force is made up of law enforcement officers from Pierce and King counties. The task force’s duty is to find stolen vehicles and take down organized theft rings.

Nearly 50 vehicles were stolen over the long weekend and the group has released a list of stolen vehicles that they are on the lookout for.

Tacoma was by far the worst hit, with 22 car thefts in the city.

Of the stolen vehicles, only 12 have been recovered.

Skamania County delivery driver’s attempted burglary

A part-time delivery driver for the United Parcel Service has been arrested for an attempted burglary that happened Saturday, July 2, in Washougal, Wash.

According to the report, the man broke into a home while the owners were asleep, around 9:20 p.m. by going in through the back door.

After being confronted by the homeowner’s daughter, the man fled, leaving behind the package he was meant to deliver before breaking in.

The next day, there was a second call about an attempted break-in a short way up the road. The UPS driver was not able to actually break in.

Using security footage from both events and with help from the UPS depot in Portland, the suspect was identified.

The 26-year-old man was arrested and charged with residential burglary, criminal trespassing, and third-degree theft.

Updates: Suspect identified in Lynnwood and Belgard taken into custody

Kitsap County Sheriffs office has taken a man wanted for shooting a woman in the face into custody.

Kitsap county sheriff had previously offered $1000000 warrant on Sonny Lee Belgard Jr.

After a shootout with police at a Lynnwood salvage yard, Pick-n-Pull, police have identified the suspect.

Lane Scott Phipps, a 26-year-old man, was wanted for first-degree assault, felony harassment, and more when he was identified at the salvage yard by his black Jaguar in the parking lot.

After being confronted by police, Phipps put a gun to a woman’s head, while negotiating with police, before climbing a fence to escape.

He fired at least one shot at police, who returned fire.

He is still at large, and police warn the public he is considered armed and dangerous.
